Information About Autonomous Colleges

There are two types of colleges (1) Affiliated and (2) Autonomous Colleges.

  • The first type is affiliated colleges. This type of colleges are affiliated to their home university or any other university. The affiliated colleges only follow the rules and regulations by the respected university it is affiliated to. The syllabus is also decided by the university. Along with this the exams are conducted by the university. This means that all colleges affiliated to the particular university will have the same syllabus, exam pattern.
  • On the other hand. is the second type-autonomous colleges are free from universities in some or almost all conditions. They have their own syllabus and exam patterns. All the academic-calender is decided by the college itself. Let's get known more about this colleges : -





AUTONOMOUS COLLEGES

  • Autonomous Colleges are connected to the universities or some government body like affiliated colleges but they follow their own regulations.
  • This colleges can have their own rules for admissions i.e. they can do assessments, conduct the examinations for admissions or they can promote their research relevant in fields etc.
  • Autonomous colleges have the freedom to determine or prescribe their own course of study or syllabi and they can redesign or restructure the existing course according to the local needs.
  • They have freedom to design their own exam pattern, dates, syllabus and to declare results.
  • Criteria for colleges to become autonomous:
                  According to the UGC (University Grants Commission) 

All Colleges (of any discipline) under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act whether aided, partially aided and unaided/self-financing are eligible to apply for autonomous status after they have completed minimum 10 years of existence and have been accredited by either NAAC with minimum 'A' Grade or by NBA for at least three programme(s) with a minimum score of 675 individually or a corresponding accreditation Grade/score from a UGC empaneled accreditation agency. However, if the number programme(s) being run by the Institution is less than three, then each of the programmes should secure 675 or more marks. Accreditation status must be valid at the time of application.

  • Students in autonomous colleges have not much pressure of studies as compared to universities. Because the syllabus going to come is almost same as taught in the classroom. If the student pays the attention in the classroom itself, he will not have to worry much.
  • The benefit of the above point is that the student get much time to explore the extra-curricular activities or learning something new. 
  • Major advantage is the course of study is up to date or upgraded according to need of future or according to new terms and technologies.
  • This colleges can also offer short term courses for students like learning new languages or any other study related course.
  • As it is a autonomous college the infrastructure is good. Student get a creative and fresh environment. Lab equipment's are better than any other colleges.
  • Students get the guidance from the highly experienced teachers.
  • Placements are good in these colleges. They ensures that all eligible students get placed.

  1. There are about 708 autonomous colleges in India.
  2. Among all states Tamil Nadu has the highest number of autonomous colleges in India.
  3. Each IIT is an autonomous university, linked to the others through a common IIT Council, which oversees their administration.
  4. The final degree certificate is issued by the University to which college is affiliated.
